BANNERS OF RESISTANCE
October 2025 - Ongoing
BANNERS OF RESISTANCE is a textile-based, community-responsive banner project that centers a collective-making process through art builds and stitching circles. The banners serve as public visual markers of solidarity, resistance, and memorial.
Yehimi Cambrón Álvarez initiated this project in October 2025 to meet the need for groundedness, healing, and hope in response to the violence inflicted on communities across the country. This project is a reminder of Angela Y. Davis’s words in Freedom is a Constant Struggle: “It is in collectivities that we find reservoirs of hope and optimism.”
The message and placement of each banner is determined by directly-impacted community members and their allies. There are currently 12 banners in progress at various stages of completion.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT:
Cambrón received initial funding in November from a local Chicago organization to kick off the project. She is currently seeking community and institutional support to keep the project’s momentum going and to help get more banners into the hands of community members:
Cambrón is seeking funding that will cover:
Materials for the banners (fabric, felt, embroidery needles and thread, scissors, etc.)
Supplies for monthly Art Builds (name tags, markers, refreshments, snacks)
An artist fee that enables Cambrón to dedicate 20 hours a week ($45/hour) to work on the project to accomplish the following:
Develop, manage, and direct the project for one year
Research opportunities to fund, highlight, and exhibit the project
Expand the project nationally
Honorariums for local and directly-impacted creatives who will be contracted to:
Film and produce tutorial videos to make the banner process comprehensive and accessible
Photograph the banners at their chosen locations
Produce prints of the banners to amplify their messages
Build a digital story map connecting the banners to their geographic representation
